The first permanent English settlers in the New World were 104 men and boys who landed at Jamestown in 1607. The arrival of more settlers from England in the next three years kept Jamestown from being wiped out. From that tiny settlement, the United States grew.

Yorktown
Yorktown was the decisive victory in the Revolutionary War, the most important battle in the most important war in American history. The nine-day battle all but destroyed what had been the richest, busiest tobacco port on Chesapeake Bay. Yorktown bought the American colonies their freedom.
